James Monroe’s major contribution was his Monroe Doctrine. The Monroe Doctrine was a speech. A speech that now is compared to Washington’s ‘Farewell Speech’ and “open Door Policy’ by John Hay. It was a policy and statement that the U.S. still follows today.

What did he do after he left office:

James Monroe spent his time with his family and tended to his farm when he left office in 1824. He mainly tried to fix his financial problems. He told the federal government they owed him tens of thousands of dollars for his contributions. The government eventually gave him a fraction of the money and he paid off his debts and left his children an inheritance.
